Steve Lukather – Bridges

On ne fera pas l’affront de présenter Steve Lukather ne serait-ce que pour éviter de passer en revue les centaines d’albums sur lesquels il a plus ou moins collaborés, son histoire avec TOTO ou ses cinq Grammy Awards égrainés sur une tranche de pain complet de presqu’un demi-siècle de carrière. Après la sortie de son autobiographie The Gospel According to Luke et la rupture définitive avec toute une partie de sa famille de cœur (Porcaro), le guitariste est reparti au charbon des studios, entre deux tournées avec Ringo Starr. En ressort un neuvième album solo sobrement intitulé Bridges. Et de ponts il est question puisque de l’aveu même de l’ami, le résultat représente probablement ce qui se rapprocherait le plus de ce donnerait un nouvel opus de TOTO. Déjà par la présence aux compos de David Paich et Joseph Williams mais également le retour des paroliers Randy Goodrum, Stan Lynch, d’anciens acolytes comme Simon Phillips ou encore Leland Sklar et même Jorgen Carlsso (Gov’t Mule). Bref, du lourd bien carabiné qui lui permet quelques riffs bien sentis (« Far From Over »), des petits pas de côté légèrement prog (« Someone », « I’ll Never Know »), bluesy (« Take My Love », « Burning Bridges ») et des soli toujours réjouissants (« Not My Kind of People », « When I See You Again »). Co-produit par le fiston Trev Lukather, l’ensemble s’avère un bel album, solide, impeccablement interprété, qui saura toucher les fans de TOTO et pas mal d’autre et dont le seul défaut pourrait être une durée ramassée sur à peine 35 minutes.

We will not make the affront of presenting Steve Lukather if only to avoid reviewing the hundreds of albums on which he has more or less collaborated, his history with TOTO or his five Grammy Awards strewn on a slice of wholemeal bread of almost half a century of career. After the release of his autobiography The Gospel According to Luke and the final break with a whole part of his family at heart (Porcaro), the guitarist went back to the coal of the studios, between two tours with Ringo Starr. A ninth solo album soberly titled Bridges emerges. And of bridges it is question since of the admission even of the friend, the result represents probably what would approach the most what would give a new opus of TOTO. Already by the presence in the compositions of David Paich and Joseph Williams but also the return of lyricists Randy Goodrum, Stan Lynch, former acolytes like Simon Phillips or Leland Sklar and even Jorgen Carlsso (Gov’t Mule). In short, some well-built heavy stuff that allows him some well-felt riffs (“Far From Over”), little slightly prog sidesteps (“Someone”, “I’ll Never Know”), bluesy (“Take My Love”, “Burning Bridges”) and always cheerful solos (“Not My Kind of People”, “When I See You Again”). Co-produced by son Trev Lukather, the whole thing turns out to be a very beautiful album, solid, impeccably performed, which will touch TOTO fans and a lot of others and whose only fault could be a short duration on barely 35 minutes.
