Steve Thorne – Malice in Plunderland

Steve Thorne n’a sans aucun doute pas la place qui lui revient dans le paysage prog rock actuel. S’il s’est lancé il y a presque vingt ans dans une carrière solo notamment ponctuée d’une trilogie très influencée par un néo-prog à la IQ, Jadis et autres Arena (Emotional Creatures, 2005 – 2007 et 2020), il n’avait pas manqué de marquer le coup sur Into the Ether (2009). Pour son septième album, Malice in Plunderland, il revient avec une poignée de titres plutôt réjouissants. La raison n’est pas à chercher très loin quand on connaît l’efficacité du compositeur qui parvient à balancer des mélodies à la fois généreuses mais jamais exagérément tape à l’oreille. Et c’est bien de ce côté qu’il faut prendre cet album, et plus généralement la discographie de Steve Thorne, dont le talent se déploie principalement (pour ne pas dire uniquement) sur des formats classiques plutôt que sur de l’allongé au kilomètre. Avec sa patine prog-rock qu’on retrouve notamment dans la production et les arrangements qui permettent à l’album de dépasser sans vergogne les influences d’un néo-prog eighties (« Tall and Strong ») ou d’une pop acidulée (« Malice in Plunderland »). Les chansons ont beau déployer des textes à l’ironie mordante, l’ensemble ne se vautre jamais dans les marasmes dépressifs ou anxiogènes. Au contraire, plutôt festif, l’album joue avec des rythmiques qui font taper du pied et des mains (« Rubble and Dust »), notamment par la présence toujours aussi impeccable de l’immense Nick D’Virgilio (Big Big Train, Spock’s Beard) qui permet à l’ensemble de gagner en puissance sans jamais forcer le trait. Les soli solides de Geoff Lea (« These Clowns ») peuvent ainsi compléter un Steve Thorne multi-instrumentiste qui ne s’économise jamais.

Steve Thorne undoubtedly does not have his rightful place in the current prog rock landscape. If he launched almost twenty years ago in a solo career notably punctuated by a trilogy very influenced by a neo-prog à la IQ, Jadis and other Arena (Emotional Creatures, 2005 – 2007 and 2020), he had not failed to mark the occasion on Into the Ether (2009). For his seventh album, Malice in Plunderland, he returns with a handful of rather cheerful tracks. The reason is not to be sought very far when you know the efficiency of the composer who manages to swing melodies that are both generous but never overly flashy. And it is from this side that we must take this album, and more generally the discography of Steve Thorne, whose talent is deployed mainly (not to say only) on classic formats rather than on elongated kilometer. With its prog-rock patina that we find in particular in the production and the arrangements which allow the album to shamelessly go beyond the influences of a neo-prog eighties (“Tall and Strong”) or a tangy pop ( “Malice in Plunderland”). The songs may deploy texts with biting irony, the whole never wallows in depressive or anxiety-provoking slumps. On the contrary, rather festive, the album plays with rhythms that make your feet and hands clap (“Rubble and Dust”), in particular by the still impeccable presence of the immense Nick D’Virgilio (Big Big Train, Spock’s Beard) which allows the whole to gain in power without ever forcing the line. The solid solos of Geoff Lea (“These Clowns”) can thus complete a multi-instrumentalist Steve Thorne who never spares himself.
