RPWL – Crime Scene

Après avoir exploré avec succès l’espace intersidéral qui nous entoure lors de sa précédente production, RPWL nous emmène cette fois aux confins de la folie et au plus profond de la noirceur de l’âme humaine en mettant en musique quelques uns des criminels les plus sordides dans “Crime Scene“, son 9ème album studio. Du haut de ses trois quart d’heure au garot, ce nouvel album respire une nouvelle fois les effluves Pink Floyd et puisqu’on ne se refait pas totalement, il faudra une nouvelle fois constater la parfaite digestion d’une influence qui aurait congestionné la plupart des opportunistes adeptes du rétroviseur musical. Concernant nos amis, le savoir faire mélodique dépasse le simple pointage du doigt avec tout ce qu’il faut de soli inspirés (« King of the World », « Victim of Desire ») et de balades qui embarquent immédiatement (« Red Rose »). En choisissant d’aller droit au but sans passer par une emphase déplacée ou inutile, RPWL n’enfoncent jamais les portes ouvertes et se permettent de traiter une thématique pour le moins glauque sans sombrer dans une texture sonore dépressive ou anxiogène. L’exemple de « A Cold Spring Day in ‘22 » donne le ton avec une rythmique qui fait littéralement décoller son refrain (on pourra même penser au Porcupine Tree période Lightbulb Sun), les atmosphères de « Life in a Cage » (dans son carcan Genesis) et les aspérités jazzy de « King of the World » qui permettent au titre de flirter avec les 13 minutes sans laisser l’auditeur sombrer dans une torpeur languide. Porté par une production au cordeau, Crime Scene offre ainsi son lot de titres épatants qui ne réinventent pas l’univers du groupe mais qui saura convaincre les derniers réfractaires tout autant que les nouveaux venus qui trouveront ici largement de quoi nourrir leur envie d’un prog-rock raffiné.

Concerning our friends, the melodic know-how goes beyond the simple pointing of the finger with all that is needed from inspired solos (“King of the World”, “Victim of Desire”) and ballads that embark immediately (“Red Rose”) . By choosing to go straight to the point without going through an inappropriate or useless emphasis, RPWL never push open doors and allow themselves to deal with a theme that is gloomy to say the least without sinking into a depressive or anxiety-provoking sound texture. The example of “A Cold Spring Day in ’22” sets the tone with a rhythm that literally makes its chorus take off (we can even think of the Porcupine Tree from the Lightbulb Sun period), the atmospheres of “Life in a Cage” (in its straitjacket Genesis) and the jazzy asperities of “King of the World” which allow the title to flirt with 13 minutes without letting the listener sink into a languid torpor. Carried by a production line, Crime Scene thus offers its share of amazing titles which do not reinvent the universe of the group but which will be able to convince the last refractory as well as the newcomers who will find here largely enough to feed their desire for a refined prog rock.
