Loreena McKennitt – Under a Winter’s Moon

Enregistré en décembre 2021 à Stratford, en Ontario, dans une église historique, Under a Winter’s Moon mélange à la fois une quinzaine de chansons et des contes de saison narrés par les comédiens Cedric Smith et Tom Jackson. Pour Loreena McKennitt, ce n’est pas une nouveauté après deux précédents albums du même tonneau, To Drive A Cold Winter Away (1987) et A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2008) dont elle reprend plusieurs titres emblématiques tels que les traditionnels “Snow”, “Banquet Hall”, “Bulalow”, “In the Bleak Mindwinter”, “Coventry Carol”, “Good King Wenceslas” ou “Huron Carol” qui reste aujourd’hui le plus vieux chant de Noël canadien connu. Pour l’occasion, la chanteuse et harpiste est entourée des habituées Caroline Lavelle (violoncelle), Graham Hargrove (percussions) mais également de Errol Fischer (fiddle), Pete Watson (guitare) et Cait Watson (Irish whistle). Le résultat offre une heure et demie d’un voyage à la fois gracieux et dépaysant à travers légendes et musiques celtiques, la voix de Loreena McKennitt étant idéale pour porter l’ensemble dans l’univers féérique des histoires évoqués. Rien de bien nouveau pourront dire les grincheux et pourtant, au-delà d’une enveloppe musicale pas si surprenante, c’est bien la chaleur et la délicatesse de la prestation qui ressortent de l’enregistrement. Et au centre Loreena, toujours aussi envoûtante.

Recorded in December 2021 in Stratford, Ontario, in a historic church, Under a Winter’s Moon mixes fifteen songs at a time with seasonal tales narrated by comedians Cedric Smith and Tom Jackson. For Loreena McKennitt, this is not a novelty after two previous albums of the same barrel, To Drive A Cold Winter Away (1987) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2008) from which she takes several emblematic titles such as the traditional “Snow”, “Banquet Hall”, “Bulalow”, “In the Bleak Mindwinter”, “Coventry Carol”, “Good King Wenceslas” or “Huron Carol” which remains today the oldest known Canadian Christmas carol. For the occasion, the singer and harpist is surrounded by regulars Caroline Lavelle (cello), Graham Hargrove (percussion) but also Errol Fischer (fiddle), Pete Watson (guitar) and Cait Watson (Irish whistle). The result offers an hour and a half of a journey that is both graceful and exotic through Celtic legends and music, the voice of Loreena McKennitt being ideal to bring the whole thing into the magical universe of the tales evoked. Nothing new will say the grumpy and yet, beyond a universe that is not so surprising, it is the warmth and the delicacy of the performance that emerge from the recording. And in the center Loreena, always so bewitching.
