The Tangent – To Follow Polaris

Pour le treizième album estampillé The Tangent, l’ami Andy Tillison revient seul aux commandes, aux manettes et aux instruments par indisponibilité de ses comparses habituels. Résultat, The Tangent est renommé The Tangent For One. Musicalement, To Follow Polaris reprend l’histoire où Songs From The Hard Shoulder s’arrêtait il y a deux ans. Dès « The North Sky« , l’influence de Yes est manifeste, suivant une rythmique électro, les variations jazzy enrobent le reste tout comme « The Fire Line » qui ajoute une touche de funk bienvenue. Les ambiances donnent envie d’agiter les épaules mais il ne faut pas s’y fier. Le son d’Andy reste identifiable. Des claviers au chant, il défend une certaine idée du progrock ancré dans les seventies et pourtant bien moderne. Et à ce petit jeu, c’est bien les 20 minutes de « The Anachronism » qui emportent la mise. Au-delà d’un texte qui flingue la corruption des gouvernements, le titre déroule ses changements de rythme, ses variations, sans maniérisme et avec une certaine idée de l’élégance. Tout cela en mode solo. Dans cette échappée belle, Andy Tillison n’oublie pas de revenir vers Yes (période Trevor Rabin cette fois), encore et toujours, avec « The Single« , réenregistrement d’un titre plus pop qui laisse résonner son refrain catchy.  Une pause qui rappelle que la composition a ses subtilités que ce soit dans ses titres courts comme dans ses longs développements. Et de long développement il est finalement question, une fois encore, sur le titre bonus « Tea at Bettys Simulation » qui expérimente sur plus d’un quart d’heure, flirtant autour de Zappa sur un tapis qui n’a rien de velours. Il faudra donc s’accrocher tout en reconnaissant à Tillison un vrai talent multi-instrumentiste qui sait électriser les choses. Hormis ce titre qui reste pour amateur averti, et les explorateurs soniques patentés, To Follow Polaris s’avère un bon album solide, avec ses embardées et son mélange de mélodies qui donne à notion de versatilité ses lettres de noblesse.

For the thirteenth album called The Tangent, friend Andy Tillison returns alone to the controls, controllers and instruments due to the unavailability of his usual companions. As a result, The Tangent is renamed The Tangent For One. Musically, To Follow Polaris picks up the story where “Songs From The Hard Shoulder” left off two years ago. From « The North Sky », the influence of Yes is evident, following an electro rhythm, the jazzy variations coat the rest just like « The Fire Line » which adds a welcome touch of funk. The atmospheres make you want to shake your shoulders but you shouldn’t rely on them. Andy’s sound remains identifiable. From keyboards to vocals, he defends a certain idea of ​​progrock anchored in the seventies and yet very modern. And in this little game, it is the 20 minutes of “The Anachronism” which wins. Beyond a text which blasts government corruption, the title unfolds its changes of rhythm, its variations, without mannerism and with a certain idea of ​​elegance. All this in single player mode. In this beautiful escape, Andy Tillison does not forget to return to Yes (Rabin period this time), again and again, with « The Single », re-recording of a more pop track which lets its catchy chorus resonate.  A pause which reminds us that the composition has its subtleties, whether in its short titles or in its development logs. And there is finally a question of long development, once again, on the bonus track « Tea at Bettys Simulation » which experiments over more than a quarter of an hour, flirting around Zappa on a carpet that is anything but velvet. We will therefore have to hold on while recognizing Tillison as a real multi-instrumentalist talent who knows how to electrify things. Apart from this title which remains for experienced amateurs, and the patented sonic explorers, To Follow Polaris turns out to be a good solid album, with its lurches and its mixture of melodies which gives the notion of versatility its letters of nobility.
