Barock Project – Time Voyager

Dans la série des formations qui gagnent à être encore plus connues qu’elles ne le sont déjà, revoici nos amis transalpins de Barock Project avec Time Voyager, un septième album qui succède aux très appréciés Detachment (2017) et Seven Seas (2019). Entre temps le claviériste Luca Zabinni a pris le temps d’une escapade en solo (One, 2021) sans que cela n’affecte un travail de groupe qui regorge toujours d’une créativité au-delà du tout-venant. A bien l’écouter, Time Voyager est une œuvre à part entière pensée en multiple dimensions. En navigant sur un style qui a construit le son du groupe, son identité, l’album s’autorise des furetages au gré des genres, multipliant les horizons musicaux avec un sacré tempérament. Le voyage dans les interstices temporels en guise de concept, les voici se balader dans l’orchestral introductif « Carry On » (on pense à Kansas), le folklorique « The Ship Travel » (coucou Jethro Tull), les volutes celtiques de l’exquis « The Lost Ship Tavern » ou des contours orientaux de « Voyager« . Certains pourront toujours crier au manque de cohérence et pourtant c’est bien la colonne vertébrale du concept initial qui est appliqué ici. Avec leur talent d’instrumentistes que personne n’osera remettre en question, le quintet se paye le luxe de jouer sur les humeurs : un peu de spleen (« Shibuya 3 A.M.« ), du festif (« Lonely Girl« ), de la ballade à la cool (« Mediterranean« ), du grandiose (« An Ordinary Day’s Odyssey« ), rien qui ne soit trop coloré ou trop sombre. Les amateurs de musique dépressive carabinée en seront pour leur frais. Barock Project offre une fois encore une partition qui s’emploie à tricoter une musique espiègle qui donne envie de taper du pied et des mains. Sans vergogne. Tout au long de ces 71 minutes sans temps mort ni baisse de tension offrant ainsi une œuvre profondément réussie et un sommet discographique incontournable.

In the series of groups which benefit from being even better known than they already are, here are our transalpine friends from Barock Project with Time Voyager, a seventh album which follows the very popular Detachment (2017) and Seven Seas (2019). In the meantime, keyboardist Luca Zabinni has taken the time for a solo escapade (One, 2021) without this affecting the group work which is always full of creativity beyond the ordinary. If you listen to it carefully, Time Voyager is a work in its own right thought out in multiple dimensions. By navigating a style that has built the sound of the group, its identity, the album allows itself to wander through genres, multiplying musical horizons with great temperament. The journey into the interstices of time as a concept, here they wander in the introductory orchestral « Carry On » (we think of Kansas), the folkloric « The Ship Travel » (hello Jethro Tull), the Celtic volutes of exquisite “The Lost Ship Tavern” or oriental contours of “Voyager”. Some may always cry about the lack of coherence and yet it is indeed the backbone of the initial concept which is applied here. With their talent as instrumentalists that no one will dare to question, the quintet has the luxury of playing on moods: a little spleen (« Shibuya 3 A.M. »), something festive (« Lonely Girl »), some cool ballad (« Mediterranean »), nothing too colorful or too dark. Lovers of harsh depressive music will be in for a treat. Barock Project once again offers a score that strives to create mischievous music that makes you want to tap your feet and tap your hands. Shameless. Throughout these 71 minutes without downtime or drop in tension, offering a profoundly successful work.
