Lunatic Soul – Through Shaded Woods

Bonne pioche ! Avec le confinement, l’inspiration de Mariusz Duda ne connaît pas la crise. Après un album totalement personnel sur l’enfermement (Lockdown Spaces), le revoici avec son projet Lunatic Soul qui avait démarré en 2008 avec un premier opus éclatant de noirceur, puis son pendant lumineux. Si le concept initial se diluera peu à peu dans un style moins contemplatif, culminant dans ses aspérités tortueuses avec Fractured (2017) et Under the Fragmented Sky (2018), le chanteur-compositeur revient ici avec une recette à la fois folk, celtique mais aussi ambient et métal. Les sonorités sont plus apaisées sans plonger dans une torpeur languide qui balancerait l’idée dans une forme de psychédélisme sous tranquillisant : Through Shaded Woods est bien plus que cela et surfe sur des nappes de guitares aériennes (« Navvie »), des rythmes lancinants (« The Passage »), une richesse sonore qui regorge d’une foultitude d’ambitions (« Through Shaded Woods », « Summoning Dance ») qui réinvente l’ADN de Lunatic Soul. Ce disque n’est plus en noir et blanc mais peint d’une palette automnale qui dépasse la mélancolie générique des chansons proposées (« The Fountain »). La voix de Mariusz Duda peut alors se poser sur cette parenthèse temporelle, souffler le chaud et le froid avec ces morceaux hypnotiques, intimement déchirants, d’où émane cette lumière qui n’appartient qu’aux grands albums.

Good luck! With the confinement, the inspiration of Mariusz Duda does not know the crisis. After a totally personal album on confinement (Lockdown Spaces), here he is again with his Lunatic Soul project which started in 2008 with a first opus bursting with darkness, then its luminous counterpart. While the initial concept will gradually dilute into a less contemplative style, culminating in its tortuous roughness with Fractured (2017) and Under the Fragmented Sky (2018), the singer-songwriter returns here with a recipe that is at once folk, Celtic, but also ambient and metal. The sonorities are more soothed without plunging into a languid torpor that would swing the idea into a form of psychedelia under tranquilizer : Through Shaded Woods is much more than that and surfs on layers of aerial guitars (“Navvie”), haunting rhythms (“The Passage”), a richness of sound full of ambition (“Through Shaded Woods”, “Summoning Dance”) that reinvents the DNA of Lunatic Soul. This record is no longer in black and white but painted with an autumnal palette that goes beyond the generic melancholy of the proposed songs (“The Fountain”). Mariusz Duda’s voice can then rest on this temporal parenthesis, blowing hot and cold with these hypnotic, intimately heart-rending tracks, from which emanates this light that only belongs to great albums.
