Big Big Train – The Likes of Us

Un tour de force. Après la disparition soudaine et tragique de David Longdon, beaucoup se posaient la question de la suite des aventures de Big Big Train. Poursuivre mais comment ? Et avec qui ?  Quelle étrange idée. Et pourtant. L’arrivée du chanteur Alberto Bravin (ex-Premiata Forneria Marconi), également guitariste et clavéiriste, n’a heureusement rien d’un hommage déguisé puisque sa voix et son phrasé se révèlent à la fois différents de son prédécesseur tout en conservant la tessiture nécessaire à la revisite du catalogue. En se fondant avec autant d’aisance dans l’univers du groupe, le pari, risqué, est parfaitement réussi. Entouré du pilier Gregory Spawton (dernier bastion d’origine) et des habitués Nick D’Virgilio, Rikard Sjöblom, Dave Foster, Clare Lindley et du nouveau venu Oskar Holldorff, les débuts d’Alberto Bravin signent également l’arrivée du groupe dans le giron d’Inside Out qui, décidément, cumule des bonnes prises. Dès lors, The Likes of Us propose huit titres originaux étalés sur une tranche de pain complet d’un peu plus d’une heure. Album collectif, chacun y est allé de son talent d’instrumentiste mais également dans la composition ainsi qu’au chant ! Alberto n’est pas seul et cette émulation permet des horizons harmoniques variés et sensibles à travers des morceaux, aux textes toujours savamment travaillés, qui jouent sur les deux extrémités de la corde (« Skates On »). L’album alterne ainsi single catchy (« Love is the Light », « Oblivion », « Last Eleven »), ballade irrésistible (« Bookmarks ») et envolées d’une maîtrise digne des grands noms (« Miramare », « Beneath the Masts »). Petite merveille de ProgRock moderne, The Like of Us rassemblera les esthètes du genre en se plaçant dores-et-déjà très haut dans la discographie velue de Big Big Train. Comme un point d’équilibre où surgissent des points de tensions sur ligne d’élégance continue avec ce souffle indispensable des albums de référence. Immanquable.

A tour de force. After the sudden and tragic disappearance of David Longdon, many were wondering what the continuation of the adventures of Big Big Train would be like. Continue but how? And with who ? What a strange idea. And yet. The arrival of singer Alberto Bravin (ex-Premiata Forneria Marconi), also a guitarist and keyboardist, is fortunately not a disguised homage since his voice and his phrasing prove to be both different from his predecessor while retaining the range necessary for revisiting the catalog. By blending so easily into the group’s universe, the risky gamble is perfectly successful. Surrounded by pillar Gregory Spawton (last original bastion) and regulars Nick D’Virgilio, Rikard Sjöblom, Dave Foster, Clare Lindley and newcomer Oskar Holldorff, the debut of Alberto Bravin also marks the group’s arrival in the in the fold of Inside Out which, definitely, has some good catches. From then on, The Likes of Us offers eight original tracks spread over a slice of wholemeal bread lasting just over an hour. Collective album, everyone contributed their talent as an instrumentalist but also in composition and singing! Alberto is not alone and this emulation allows varied and sensitive harmonic horizons through pieces, with always skilfully worked texts, which play on both ends of the rope (“Skates On”). The album alternates between catchy singles (“Love is the Light”, “Oblivion”, “Last Eleven”), irresistible ballads (“Bookmarks”) and flights of mastery worthy of the big names (“Miramare”, “Beneath the Masts”). A little marvel of modern ProgRock, The Like of Us will bring together aesthetes of the genre by already placing itself very high in Big Big Train’s hairy discography. Like a point of balance where points of tension arise on a continuous line of elegance with this essential breath of reference albums. Unmissable.
