La prière
3.8Note Finale

Faire ressentir l’invisible. L’indicible.

ENGLISH VERSION

THE PRAYER

Make the audience feel the invisible and the indescribable. The Prayer is more a film about brotherhood, self-belief and belief in mankind than a troubling religious story. In the film, Cédric Kahn is able to touch base again with a certain kind of simplicity and discipline that he captured in his initial feature films. Here, his bare-bones approach makes the characters the focus of a non-linear narrative. By opting not to use top-billing actors (except for Hanna Schygulla, an undisputed cinematographic myth created by Rainer Werner Fassbinder), the director concentrates on the distress and the aspirations of Thomas, a junkie seeking to cure himself of his drug addiction in a community nestled in the heart of the French Alps. The film places love, friendship and faith on the same footing. It questions and rattles the viewer, without giving any answers. Even lost up in the mountains and enveloped in an almost miraculous resolution – but without the proselytizing religious certitudes – the hero, impressively portrayed by the young Anthony Bajon and winner of the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin Film Festival, slowly gets his life back on track. The director films the magnetic face of the protagonist, barely out of his teens, who is captive in a mountainscape that the director transforms into a character in its own right. Thomas seeks to make his own way, stumbles before righting himself, all under the watchful eye of a camera that never takes sides and never treats the subjects as one and the same thing for fear of removing the mystery. And yet, in a clear-cut way and by keeping a healthy distance, Cédric Kahn refuses to judge. He observes this mystery with a creative benevolence.
