Jugé coupable
3.8Note Finale

ENGLISH VERSION

TRUE CRIME

After the failure of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Clint Eastwood decided to continue with a more popular project but not without fantasy and in-depth. True Crime lays the foundations of his plot for the imminent execution of an unjustly convicted man. Déjà vu? Far from following the pro-death penalty theses, without openly condemning them either (he always leaves it up to the viewer to take a stand), the film allows the actor to compose a rather unpleasant character of a bad husband and bad father, an unrepentant womanizer who is totally focused on drinking. Curiously, the film leaves out all the action of the main plot, except for a visit to the zoo, which ends with a bizarre stroller accident that shamelessly ejects the hero’s little daughter… played by Francesca Eastwood, Clint Eastwood‘s own daughter. By the way, he doesn’t hesitate to criticize religion (which will come back later in Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino), the press eager for sensationalism (Richard Jewell), to set a few scenes of pure comedy (The Mule) with the editor-in-chief (James Woods in shape) or the cuckolded editor (Dennis Leary, hilarious) and to play codes of suspense against the clock with flawless skill. Surprisingly, the main story is of less interest to the director than anything that revolves around it. In fact, the film is not so much a plea against the death penalty (we’re a long way from Tim RobbinsDead Man Walking) as the investigation of a man in search of a belated redemption. From this point of view, True Crime has enough arguments to offer an atypical film that skillfully slaloms over the commonplaces of the genre. Involved, Clint Eastwood will even sign the final song, performed by Diana Krall, which will not be enough to save the film from a bitter failure at the box office.
