Honkytonk Man
4.5TOP 1982

HONKYTONK MAN

With an ultra-tight budget of $2 million and shot in just five weeks, Honkytonk Man was released in 1982, the same year as Firefox, which can still be appreciated today as a spectacular and disembodied film, dedicated to its sole commercial objective. In perfect antithesis, Honkytonk Man wants to be more personal, both with regard to the time when the action was taking place, the Great Depression that the filmmaker went through as a child, and with regard to the casting where he shares the poster with his own son, Kyle. By playing Red Stovall, a lost and tuberculous guitarist, the director also offers himself a role that is touching, pathetic and moving. High performance. Beyond all biographical considerations, has never concealed his admiration for John Ford and John Huston, whose taste for dust can be found here. It is therefore not surprising that part of the plot is located not far from the action of the Misfits (1961), which deeply explored the flamboyant dereliction combined with an unavoidable tragedy. Above all, once again showed his taste for wide open spaces, simple people, country music, the land, without ever falling into picturesque, picaresque or condescension. The result is a soft and uneventful look at the marginalized in a society undergoing transformation. Between two eras. A film about everyday heroism, heritage and transmission, themes that will become the true revealing heart of his work, Honkytonk Man also deals with filiation and sacrifice with a rare modesty.  Make no mistake about it, this look also says a lot about ‘s vision of America. But by avoiding pulling the rope and unrolling the reactionary ball that was stretching out its arms, the film succeeded in maintaining a permanent, unfeigned emotion of disarming sincerity. The road movie then turns into something big. Beyond the confidentiality with which it will be distributed and then received by the public, Honkytonk Man is a moving film.
