ENGLISH VERSION

A major turning-point in Clint Eastwood‘s career, the 90s marked a drastic slowdown in his acting career “for the others” with the unique In the Line of Fire (a film by the way Columbia and not Warner) by Wolfgang Petersen, a thriller against the backdrop of the assassination of JFK released in 1993. In spite of his great public and critical success, Clint Eastwood actor will remain above all the star of his own achievements. Thanks to his status as an accomplished filmmaker, he no longer hesitates to surround himself with first-rate actors and actresses (Meryl Streep, Kevin Costner, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris…) and alternates projects and genres. He made a succession of surprising films (White Hunter Black Heart, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil), more classic films (Absolute Power, True Crime) and allowed himself to release three major works of his filmography one after the other: Unforgiven (1992) his farewell to the western, for which he received two Golden Globes and four Oscars, including those for best film and best director, A Perfect World (1993) a relative commercial failure, except in France where the film became Eastwoods biggest box-office success and was voted best film of the year for Les Cahiers du Cinéma, succeeding. .. Unforgiven, then The Bridges of Madison County (1995), which will overwhelm audiences and critics alike, and finish to establish its international aura.

From then on, Clint Eastwood felt less and less restricted by the goal of success. He increasingly intertwines his unacademic classicism with an in-depth and critical discourse, an increasingly dark vision of existence with his astonishing autobiographical injections. At the age of almost seventy, some people saw in his films the twilight and almost testamentary shaping of a work that some people saw at the end. Far from it, the filmmaker was not going to hesitate to dig deeper into the wide, notched vein. He had not said everything.
